To get a feel for the incredible variety of natural and cultural diversity to be experienced while traveling between Belize and Guatemala, here is a sample itinerary:

RioDay One:
Arrive Belize International Airport, shuttle through the scenic Stann Creek Valley, have dinner and spend night one in a jungle lodge at Caves Branch. Look over options for day two adventure.

Day Two:
Choose from educational jungle walks, birding, river kayaking, caving, cave tubing or even repelling into caves. Select your own activity level and degree of difficulty. Spend night two enjoying the sounds of the jungle.

Day Three:
Continue down the Hummingbird Highway to Dangriga, Belize’s largest African descendant settlement. Dangriga is on the coast and has an interesting market and plenty of great picture taking opportunities. Board your vessel and sail out to the Belize barrier reef. Dine aboard, watch for manatee and count the stars in a secluded anchorage.

PelicansDay Four:
Sail southward along the reef visiting small island communities and exploring uninhabited cayes. Snorkel or dive the spectacular coral gardens, learn to sail, try your hand at fly fishing, enjoy fresh grilled catch of the day and kayak through the mangroves.

Day Five:
Visit the small coastal community of Placencia, check out small shops, eat with a local family, experience the night life and learn to dance the Punta. You can also dine at a few excellent upscale resorts complete with fine wines and wood fired ovens. Spend the night in Placencia harbor.

Day Six:
catching a conchSail along the reef to the Sapodilla Cayes, Belize’s southernmost island group. Snorkeling and fishing are great. Grill some lobster, try conch ceviche or sushi if you wish and watch the setting sun from a remote and beautiful anchorage.

Day Seven
Troll for kingfish outside the reef, try your hand at spear fishing, kayaking, arrange to go SCUBA diving, take some pictures or just swing in a hammock. Order a sundowner cocktail and tell your on board chef how you would like your fresh snapper prepared. Hear the waves crashing on the nearby reef as you rest in calm tropical waters.

Day Eight:
Have a healthy on board breakfast. Enjoy another snorkeling adventure or kayak along the reef. Set sail for Guatemala. Arrive in Livingston, Guatemala at the mouth of the beautiful Rio Dulce. Livingston, or Labuga as the natives call it, is an interesting community still speaking Garifuna, its’ native West African language. You can hear the drumming and see the traditional native dances. There are plenty of interesting shops and fun places to eat. Prices are very moderate and the people are colorful. Spend the night at dock in a small marina.

Day Nine:
Sail up the scenic Rio Dulce between towering limestone cliffs amid flocks of parrots and lush tropical vegetation. Stop and take a relaxing dip in a riverside hot spring. Visit Indian villages, see small children in dugouts, giant river otter, thatch huts and islands full of nesting tropical birds. Sail across Golfette, one of the river systems large lakes, and further up the river. Spend the night in a jungle marina, hear the howler monkeys and try the local river fish at a restaurant built over the water.
